उपासना

Upāsanā Chanting

Sanskrit phonetics, the rules of correct recitation, and a repertoire of Vedic and yogic chants.

A structured chanting programme built on Śikṣā — the traditional science of correct recitation. You learn not only what to chant, but the rules that govern how every sound is made, held and joined, and why they matter.

ॐ शीक्षां व्याख्यास्यामः । वर्णः स्वरः । मात्रा बलम् । साम सन्तानः ।

oṃ śīkṣāṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ | varṇaḥ svaraḥ | mātrā balam | sāma santānaḥ

We shall expound Śikṣā: letter, accent, measure, strength, evenness, continuity. — Taittirīya Upaniṣad 1.2

What you will study

  • Level 1 — Sanskrit phonetics in full: the varṇamālā, the five places of articulation, mātrā, anusvāra and visarga
  • The six rules of the Taittirīya Upaniṣad: varṇa, svara, mātrā, balam, sāma, santāna
  • The six faults and six qualities of a reciter
  • Repertoire: the praṇava, vandanā ślokas, the five śānti pāṭhas, Gāyatrī, Mahāmṛtyuñjaya, the Pātañjala prayers, Sūrya Namaskāra mantras, Prātaḥ Smaraṇam, Bhagavad Gītā chapter 6
  • Level 2 — Vedic svara: udātta, anudātta, svarita and the dīrgha svarita
  • Reading svara-marked Devanāgarī; sandhi as a chanting discipline
  • The pāṭha system — saṃhitā, pada, krama and the eight vikṛtis
  • Repertoire: Taittirīya Śikṣāvallī, Medhā Sūkta, Puruṣa Sūkta, the complete Samādhi Pāda, Gītā 2.54–72

Who it is for

  • Yoga teachers who open class with a chant
  • Anyone who chants but has never been taught the rules
  • Sanskrit students
  • Those preparing for teacher training
Every chant is given in Devanāgarī, in transliteration and with its meaning — because reciting without knowing the meaning is itself named as a fault in the tradition.
